A 49-year-old Fowlerville man is dead after a traffic accident on westbound I-96 Monday.

According to a release from the Michigan State Police, troopers from the Brighton Post responded to the accident on westbound I-96 at Mason Road at about 1:45 p.m. Monday.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2025 Kenworth semi-truck with a trailer, driven by a 39-year-old man from Jalisco, Mexico, was heading west on I-96 when the driver slowed the vehicle and then came to a complete stop because of traffic congestion.

A 2019 Dodge Ram, driven by the Fowlerville man, hit the rear of the semi-truck. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. His passenger, a 42-year-old man from Jalisco, Mexico, was in the cab of the semi-truck, and was thrown from the bunk area; he sustained minor injuries.

According to the release, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County EMS, and the Howell Area Fire Department.
