The Fowlerville man driving a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer that crashed head-on into a 2017 Subaru Outback on Grand River Avenue in Handy Township on Feb. 5, 2025, did not have alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.
It was originally reported by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office that alcohol and speed appeared to have been contributing factors in the crash. In a Feb. 11 release, it said the original information on the crash referenced alcohol use based on witness testimony and the smell of intoxicants. “It is likely the smell came from alcohol containers at the scene,” the second release said.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
“Like all investigations when they start, information is preliminary, and as the investigation unfolds new information comes to light,” the release said. “It’s important to note that investigation is not closed until all investigative leads are exhausted.”
According to the original release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the man, who was driving a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer, was passing in the eastbound lanes of Grand River Avenue when he hit head on a 2017 Subaru Outback, driven by a 45-year-old Fowlerville woman who had an 18-year-old passenger inside. Deputies were dispatched to the crash scene at approximately 3:38 p.m.
All three people were transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing by Livingston County EMS. The driver of the Mercury Mountaineer was in serious condition; the driver of the Subaru was in serious but stable condition, and her passenger had minor injuries. All three were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
