A 28-year-old Lansing man is dead after the 2024 Range Rover he was driving, which had been reported stolen out of East Lansing on March 21, hit a 2023 Ford F-350 and then collided with a 2021 Ford F-450 stopped on the shoulder of Swarthout Road in Putnam Township at approximately 11:50 a.m. Thursday, March 26.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy located the stolen Range Rover traveling eastbound on I-96 near Mason Road in Marion Township. The vehicle exited the freeway and headed south on D-19. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle on D-19 near Francis Road, but the driver failed to stop and fled southbound on D-19 at speeds of approximately 120 mph.
When the Range Rover reached the intersection of D-19 and Swarthout Road in Putnam Township, the driver tried to pass a 2023 Ford F-350 turning left onto Swarthout Road. The Range Rover struck the front of that vehicle and lost control, colliding with a 2021 Ford F-450 that was stopped on the shoulder of the road.
The driver of the Ranger Rover was transported with critical injuries to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, where he later died; his 23-year-old passenger, also a Lansing man, was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center with critical injuries. Neither man in the stolen vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol and drug use remain under investigation.
The driver of the F-350 was not injured in the crash.
The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene investigation was completed.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Hamburg Township Police Department, Pinckney Police Department, Putnam Township Fire Department, and Livingston County EMS.
