The Downtown Howell “Stories In Storefronts” StoryWalk® is officially open and ready for readers of all ages. Families and community members can stroll through downtown Howell to explore 16 engaging StoryWalk stops featuring pages from “Tallulah The Mermaid and the Great Lakes Pledge,” written by local author Denise Brennan-Nelson.

This interactive literacy experience winds through downtown Howell businesses, offering a fun and educational way to promote reading and physical activity. Each stop has an activity and showcases a beautifully illustrated page from the story, encouraging participants to follow along as Tallulah the Mermaid takes an inspiring pledge to protect the Great Lakes.

The StoryWalk was unveiled during the Howell Carnegie District Library’s Summer Reading Kick-Off Event and is a collaboration between Great Start Livingston and Downtown Howell. The project aims to foster early literacy, healthy habits, and community engagement and was funded by a literacy grant from MI-LEAP.

“We’re thrilled to bring this literacy adventure to downtown Howell,” said Robin Schutz, Great Start Livingston coordinator. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to support local businesses, enjoy fresh air, and practice reading.”

The free activity is geared toward young readers, families, and caregivers looking for a fun summer outing. The book will be on display in windows until the end of August. A map can be found here.
