The mastiff-mix dog that authorities suspect killed its owner was destroyed on site Wednesday so medical aid could be attempted on its owner, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, animal control deputies were conducting a follow-up at an address in the 8000 block of Faussett Road in Tyrone Township. The deputies were attempting to serve the 68-year-old homeowner a notice for a show cause hearing at the Livingston County 53rd District Court as the dog at that address had also recently attacked an area resident, causing serious injuries.
While attempting to make contact with the homeowner, the animal control deputies found him in a cattle pasture with the dog actively biting him. The victim, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, had injuries consistent with those from a dog attack.
Because of the dog’s aggressive behavior toward the victim and responding emergency personnel, the animal was killed on site.
Foul play is not suspected in the incident. The owner’s body was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for an autopsy, and the official cause and manner of death are currently pending.
Deputies were assisted on scene by the Hartland Area Fire Department and Livingston County EMS.
