A 39-year-old Hamburg Township man fleeing deputies from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office underwent emergency surgery Sunday after deputies stopped his vehicle and discovered he had inflicted knife wounds to his neck.
The man, known to be wanted on felony warrants out of Livingston County, was spotted at about 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, driving a black 2004 Chevrolet Impala on Pinckney Road near Coon Lake Road in Marion Township by a deputy on routine patrol.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy waited for backup before attempting to pull the man over. When the driver turned west on Keddle Road and did not pull over, a chase ensued, during which the deputy performed a PIT maneuver to stop him. When the vehicle came to a stop, the driver was discovered with self-inflicted knife wounds to his neck.
Deputies removed the driver from the vehicle and began life-saving measures, which included wound packing and trauma bandages. Livingston County EMS took the driver to U-M Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Additional charges against the man will be requested through the Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office, according to the release.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by Livingston County EMS, Howell Area Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Brighton City Police, Green Oak Township Police, Hamburg Township Police, and other agencies from Washtenaw County.
