Deputies with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office were on routine patrol on eastbound I-96 near M-59 in Howell Township at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday when they observed a white Dodge Challenger that had been reported stolen out of Grand Rapids. When deputies tried to pull the vehicle over, it fled at speeds of 125 mph.
The vehicle exited and re-entered I-96 at Latson Road in Genoa Township when deputies lost sight and terminated the chase.
A trooper from the Michigan State Police observed the vehicle as it continued east on I-96; later the Brighton City Police Department observed the vehicle as it exited on Grand River Avenue in Brighton. Officers from the Brighton City Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, and it fled from them. The vehicle was pursued into Hartland Township where it was lost, and the chase was terminated.
A citizen called 9-1-1 and reported the vehicle was at Washington and Hibner streets in the Village of Hartland. Another citizen alerted deputies that they saw three males — two adult, one young — walking east on Hibner, away from the vehicle. A description was given of the three individuals.
A perimeter was set up, and the three subjects were located by a deputy walking out from behind a garage at Village Elementary. The subjects were given commands to stop; they chose to ignore the commands and advanced toward the deputy. At this time, a second vehicle arrived to pick up the occupants. Back-up officers also arrived and were able to take the subjects in custody.
Charges will be requested on the driver, a 29-year-old Lansing man, for fleeing and eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle, child abuse, and resisting arrest. Charges are being requested on a 26-year-old Lansing man for possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest, as well as the driver of the second vehicle, a 58-year-old Lansing woman, for operating without insurance.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Michigan State Police, Brighton City Police Department, and Hamburg Township Police Department.
