Three people were killed in a two-car crash on eastbound I-96, just east of Highland Road (M-59) in Howell Township just prior to 3:31 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.
According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation indicates that a 2010 BMW 528I driven by a 54-year-old Sterling Heights man was heading west on I-96 when it left the roadway, crossed the grass median, and continued into the eastbound lanes of the highway, where it crashed into a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer driven by a 68-year-old Fowlerville man.
The Fowlerville man and one of his passengers, a 91-year-old Howell woman, were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the BMW was pronounced deceased at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Two other passengers in the Mercury Mountaineer — a 69-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman, both from Fowlerville — were transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor in critical condition.
Alcohol, speed and seat belt use remain under investigation. The highway was closed for four hours for the investigation and clean up.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Michigan State Police, Fowlerville Police Department, Howell Area Fire Department, Livingston County EMS, and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
