Sharing is caring!

Livingston County residents with disabilities feel isolated, in want of social and recreational opportunities and a more accessible community, and they feel hampered by a lack of personal caregivers, accommodation and financial resources.

Those are the conclusions of a recent survey of the Abilities Alliance workgroup of the Human Services Collaborative Body, which aimed to understand the needs of those in the county with disabilities, and to identify service gaps.

“We need the community to focus on creating more affordable and accessible social and recreational opportunities,” said Katie Oswald, director of Full Spectrum Agency for Autistic Adults and a member of the workgroup. “People continue to struggle with isolation and unmet needs around social and recreational opportunities, with 81% reporting that they wish they had more friends or people to connect with.”

The Abilities Alliance workgroup continues to raise awareness about inclusion and accessibility, and the survey is an important part of understanding what services people most need. To that end, the workgroup has recently updated its Resource Directory, which provides information on programs, services, and agencies that offer resources and support.
