On Friday, May 23, a search warrant executed by troopers from the Brighton Post of the Michigan State Police on a Brighton Township home resulted in the seizure of over $100,000 in counterfeit money, cellphones and a computer.

According to a release from the Michigan State Police, nearly two months earlier, on March 28, Brighton Township residents reported selling a drone for $800 to a man who paid for it with cash that they discovered was counterfeit, after which they called police.

Troopers and detectives began investigating the complaint using various tools to develop possible suspects; they found that the suspects were finding items in various online marketplaces, meeting with sellers, and then paying for their purchases with counterfeit cash. They also learned that various police agencies in Livingston and Oakland counties were investigating purchases paid for with counterfeit cash in which the same suspects were believed to be involved.

The investigation is ongoing, and once complete, a request for charges will be sent to the Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
