Cleary University will host a summer wrestling skills camp from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 24 . The camp is open to all students in grades 6 through 12. All skill levels — from beginners to advanced wrestlers — are welcome. Those needing some individualized coaching will receive it.

Cost is $110 for each wrestler and includes a morning camp from 10 am to noon, and an afternoon session from 1-3 pm. Lunch is provided.

The Cleary Cougar wrestling camp consists of drills, a variety of set ups, hand fighting skills, control ties and takedowns from different positions.

Matt Santos, Cleary University’s wrestling coach

Matt Santos, Cleary’s new wrestling coach, will conduct the camp alongside Michigan State wrestlers Cam Caffey, Layne Malczewski and Chase Salidate. Caffey is the 2022 US Open wrestling champion, 2020 Big Ten Finalist, four-time NCAA national qualifier and 2019 Junior Greco World Team member. Malczewski is a three-time NCAA national qualifier, 3-time Big Ten placer and MHSAA state champion. Saldate is a two-time NCAA national qualifier, two-time Big Ten placer and CIF state champion.

Santos also brings a great deal of experience and skills to camp wrestlers. While wrestling at Michigan State University from 2016-2022, he was named a USA Wrestling Greco-Roman All American, and he received the university’s Commit Award for his commitment to the school’s wrestling program. Santos was a four-time state qualifier in high school and captured an individual state championship while wrestling at Swan Valley High School in Saginaw. After high school, he was ranked the No. 23 prospect in the nation for his weight class.

Coach Santos previously coached the Northern Elite club team for five years and was a Team USA U23 World Team trials coach for the Olivet wrestling club.
The wrestling camp will take place inside the Cleary Wellness Center on the university’s campus.

Interested wrestlers can register online. For questions about the camp, contact Coach Santos at msantos@cleary.edu or call (517) 586-3010.
