A 31-year-old Howell woman was killed in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve when the 2024 Kia Sportage she was driving crashed into a tree near Alvord Drive in Deerfield Township. The woman had been heading west on Bennett Lake Road when she failed to negotiate a curve and the vehicle left the roadway, hitting the tree.

Deputies with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2023. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, and alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The road remained closed for about four hours for the investigation and clean up. Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Hartland Area Fire Department and Livingston County EMS.

The accident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
