The Brighton District Library has launched 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, a free program that helps children, ages 0-5, get ready to read before their first big milestone of starting kindergarten.
Research shows that birth through age 5 is important for children to develop their brains and attitudes towards reading and learning. Some benefits of reading to children include: supported cognitive development, improved language skills, preparation for academic success, developing a special bond with a child, increased concentration and discipline, improved imagination and creativity, and cultivating a lifelong love of reading.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is simple: Read with your child. Read fun books, silly books, non-fiction, or the same books over and over. Read at the library, at story time, with grandparents, babysitters, and older siblings. Read and let your child’s imagination take off.
The goal is to read 1,000 books by the time your child starts kindergarten. If parents and caregivers read one book a day for 3 years, they would have surpassed the 1,000 books goal. Additionally, they’d have fostered their child’s love of reading and given them the tools needed when they start school.
arents and caregivers can get started by stopping by the Youth Services Desk at the Brighton District Library to register and pick up an information folder, and then choose an option for tracking the books they will be reading, either online or offline. Both reader options will receive a prize for every 100 books read.
