The Joann Fabric and Craft Store at 8449 W. Grand River Ave. in Brighton is among the 33 locations in Michigan slated to close as the retailer shutters about 500 of its 800 stores in the coming months as it navigates the bankruptcy process.
While Joann had said last month that it was keeping all its stores open, today the company filed a motion to begin closing approximately 500 of its 800 stores across the U.S.
“As part of the ongoing Chapter 11 process and our efforts to maximize the value of the business, Joann has filed a motion seeking court authority to begin closing approximately 500 stores across the nation,” a statement on the company’s restructuring website read. “This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve. A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time. Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for Joann.”

There was no timeline given for the store closings.
Michigan is one of the states most heavily affected by the closings, along with California, Florida, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington.
