Two people — including a firefighter with the Brighton Area Fire Authority — were injured in an early-morning crash and its aftermath on westbound I-96 at U.S. 23 in Brighton Township.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, a 37-year-old Florida man in a 2025 BMW 330 was heading west on I-96 at a high rate of speed at about 5:50 a.m. Sunday when he rear-ended a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer being driven by an 18-year-old Detroit man. The impact of the crash caused the BMW to lose control and overturn.

The driver of the BMW was taken into custody for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence; the driver of the Trailblazer was not injured.

Personnel from the Brighton Area Fire Authority assisted at the scene by closing the westbound lanes of travel. A 2023 Kia Sportage driven by a 32-year-old Au Gres woman hit a fire truck blocking the scene, which had a firefighter inside.

Fire personnel had to extricate the Kia driver from her car, and she was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor by Livingston County EMS with non-life threatening injuries. The firefighter inside the fire truck — a 58-year-old man — was transported for evaluation to St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor by Livingston County EMS.

All involved in the crashes were wearing seat belts. Both crashes remain under investigation.

The highway was closed for approximately two hours for investigation and clean up. Deputies were assisted by personnel from Livingston County EMS, Brighton Area Fire Authority, and Brighton City Police.
