In honor of Black History Month, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin spoke on the House floor to highlight seven stories of Black Michiganders past and present from the 7th Congressional District with distinct legacies as trailblazers.

Slotkin honored Elsie McPherson-Brown, the first Black member of the Hartland Consolidated Schools Board of Education, and the second Black person elected to office in Livingston County. Today, she continues to work in the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
