Livingston County’s only full-service hospital is looking to move its inpatient services from St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital on Byron Road in Howell about 8 miles east to the St. Joseph Mercy Brighton Health Center, which is more centrally located off Grand River Avenue in Genoa Township.

According to a statement from Saint Joseph Mercy Health System spokesperson Bobby Moldonado, a letter of intent has been filed to transfer inpatient services from St. Joseph Mercy Livingston to its health center campus in Genoa Township.

“This action is a first step in our health system’s long-term vision to build a new, state-of-the-art hospital in a highly accessible location to better serve one of the fastest growing communities in southeast Michigan,” Moldonado said. “The letter of intent is the first of many steps that will be taken over the next year, including the approval of this new hospital by the Trinity Health national system.”

What if any new services will be available at the new hospital are unknown, but some speculate that a birthing center — which closed at St. Joseph Mercy Livingston in 2010 during the Great Recession — may be making a comeback. Currently, women have to travel outside of Livingston County for such services.

St. Joseph Mercy Livingston, licensed for 66 beds, is Livingston County’s only full-service hospital.
