A 45-year-old Brighton bicyclist was transported with life-threatening injuries to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor after he was struck by a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Blaine Road south of Highland Road (M-59) in Hartland Township at about 10:30 p.m. Friday.

According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the man on the bicycle crossed into the path of the Jeep, which was being driven south on Blaine Road by a 17-year-old Brighton boy.

The Brighton teen in the Jeep was not injured. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and there was no lighting to the rear of his bicycle.

Speed and alcohol use do not appear to be contributing factors for the Jeep operator, while alcohol use by the bicyclist remains under investigation. The roadway remained closed for three hours for the investigation and clean up.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from Hartland Area Fire Department, Michigan State Police, and Livingston County EMS.

This incident remains under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Bureau.
