Brighton High School Dramatic Arts presents D.W. Gregory’s Radium Girls, a gripping drama based on the true story of female laborers who were poisoned and killed by their factory’s radium-based paint, Nov. 3-5, 2023, at the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts.
The play will be presented as intimate “black box” theater, with simple sets and the audience seated on the stage behind the drawn curtain, surrounding the action. Tickets are on sale now at BHSDramaticArts.com.
Plot Synopsis
In 1926, radium stood as a miraculous remedy, Madame Curie found herself a globally celebrated figure, and the craze of the day was luminous timepieces. Everything changed, however, when the young women responsible for painting these glowing watches fell victim to a mysterious ailment.
“Radium Girls” follows the determined journey of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she wages a legal battle in the courtroom. Her chief opponent is none other than her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who struggles to accept that the very substance credited with shrinking tumors could be linked to the alarming wave of sickness among his workforce.
As the case unfolds, Grace finds herself not only pitted against the U.S. Radium Corp. but also against her own family and friends, who worry that her pursuit of justice may have unintended consequences.
Praised as “potent” and “captivating” by critics, “Radium Girls” presents the opportunity for talented Brighton High School students to explore emotional, impactful material.
