U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, today voted in favor of legislation to keep the federal government funded that he says ensures essential services remain operational while preventing a government shutdown.
“We have a fundamental responsibility to keep the government open and working for the American people. I won’t allow dysfunction in Washington to jeopardize paychecks for our troops, benefits for our veterans, or critical services for families in mid-Michigan,” said Barrett in a release. “While a short-term funding bill is never ideal, it provides stability as we continue working to deliver a funding package with real and lasting solutions for the country.”
Under the legislation, the government is funded through Sept. 30, and a shutdown at the end of the week is averted. The bill now moves to the Senate, where Republicans need the votes of several Democrats to move it past a filibuster and pass it before the midnight Friday deadline.
Barrett said he has been a strong advocate for responsible fiscal policies and remains committed to reducing wasteful spending while ensuring essential programs remain intact.
