Former state Sen. Tom Barrett of Charlotte today announced his candidacy for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.
This is Barrett’s second Congressional run in the district. The 2022 race between U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin and Barrett in the newly drawn 7th District was one of the most-competitive and most-expensive Congressional races in the country, with political spending topping $34 million.
There are no other Republicans rumored to be considering a run for the 7th Congressional seat.
Michigan’s 7th Congressional District includes all of Livingston, Ingham, Clinton and Shiawassee counties, the state capital of Lansing, as well as a majority of Eaton County and small portions of Oakland and Genesee counties.
Barrett, a 22-year Army veteran, served in the Iraq War, Guantanamo Bay, Kuwait, and the Korean DMZ, and logged more than 1,000 hours flying some of the most advanced helicopters in the world. Barrett served four years in the Michigan House and four years in the Senate and was known as a fiscal hawk and veterans’ advocate.
