The 40th Annual Michigan Challenge Balloonfest returns to Howell High School from June 27–29. This iconic summer festival has become a beloved tradition in Michigan, and the 40th anniversary promises to be the biggest celebration yet. Each year, the event of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce draws tens of thousands of visitors to experience the breathtaking sight of hot air balloons, vibrant community spirit, and a weekend full of family-friendly fun — this milestone year will deliver all that and more.
Throughout the weekend, guests can enjoy scheduled hot air balloon launches that fill the skies with color and excitement. A signature feature of the festival, the Balloon Glow, will take place on both Friday and Saturday nights, transforming the festival grounds into a magical display as dozens of balloons light up the evening sky.
Adding to the wonder this year is the debut of a dazzling laser light show, also featured both nights, creating a stunning visual experience synchronized with music and lights for all ages to enjoy.
The festivities continue with the Balloons & Brews event on Saturday, June 28, where attendees can sample local craft beer, enjoy live entertainment, play games, and savor food from a variety of vendors (located in Downtown Howell). Proceeds from this event help support Howell’s Fantasy of Lights.
Families will find plenty to do throughout the weekend on Balloonfest grounds with activities in the Family Fun Tent, carnival rides provided by Big Rock Amusements, and the annual Classic Car Show on Saturday. A bustling open-air marketplace featuring local artisans and vendors will also be open all weekend.
The Balloonfest is held at Howell High School, located at 1200 W. Grand River Ave. Daily admission is $5 per person, with a weekend wristband available for $10. Children under 3 are admitted free. LETS Transportation will offer shuttle services to and from downtown Howell and other convenient locations throughout the weekend to make access easy for attendees.
Volunteers are the heart of Balloonfest. Those interested in volunteering can find more information and sign up through the official website.
