Bob Herbst

Bob Herbst will receive the Distinguished Citizen Award at the annual Clays in the Country event at Island Lake Shooting Range on May 14.

The event, hosted by the Scouting America Michigan Crossroads Council will feature a 15-station sporting clays competition, as well as networking, games and awards, and the award celebrates people whose character and commitment reflect the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Proceeds from the event supports Scouting programs.

“Events like Clays in the Country bring our community together to celebrate leadership while investing in the next generation,” said Janssen Lemley, Director of Development. “Honoring individuals like Bob Herbst helps inspire young people to lead with integrity, service, and responsibility.”

Herbst is the former owner/pharmacist of Uber’s Drugs, which was located at the corner of Main Street and Grand River Avenue in Brighton. A lifelong resident of Livingston County, Herbst was raised on a 500-acre family owned dairy farm west of Brighton. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

He began working for Chuck Uber at Uber’s Drug Store in downtown Brighton in 1955. When Uber retired, Herbst purchased the business, which he operated as sole owner for 25 years. He provided first jobs to hundreds of local students, some of whom went on to become pharmacists themselves. In 1996, Herbst sold Uber’s to Arbor Drugs, which soon sold to CVS.

Herbst continued to serve the Brighton Downtown Development Authority, including more than 20 as its chair. He was involved the building of the Brighton Center for the Performing Arts and is still involved in the Friends of the BCPA. He helped establish the Community Foundation for Livingston County, and assisted in incorporating the Friends of the Howell Nature Center.

Herbst has received many honors for his service and devotion to the Brighton community. In addition to receiving the Distinguished Service Award from the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce in 2007, he was also grand marshal of both Brighton’s Fourth of July Parade and the Brighton High School Homecoming Parade.

Herbst has been married to his high school sweetheart, Betsy, for over 60 years. Together, they have two children and five grandchildren.

Registration for the luncheon honoring Herbst will begin at 11 a.m.; after the luncheon will be the sporting clays competition and a networking reception.

All funds raised will go directly to benefit Scouting programs serving Livingston County youth.
