Deputies with the Animal Control Division of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched on April 13, 2023, to a residence in the 1000 block of Remsing Drive in Hartland Township to check the welfare of dogs after an anonymous caller reported that dogs could be heard inside the residence but were never seen outside.
During the original response by the deputies, there was no answer at the door, but several dogs could be heard inside, according to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies could see through the windows that there was a large amount of trash covering the interior of the residence, and there was a pungent smell coming from the house.
Deputies later returned to the residence with a search warrant to enter the property and seize the animals for neglect and unsanitary conditions. When they entered, the deputies saw that the residents were hoarding so much stuff and garbage in the house that the floor was no longer visible. Deputies seized the four dogs from the residence and are working with the residents to capture the 10 cats inside the residence. All animals are being turned over to the Livingston County Animal Shelter for veterinary care and additional follow up.
The Sheriff’s Office said it has submitted this case to the Prosecutor’s Office for review, and notified the Livingston County Hoarding Task Force Office for resident assistance. Animal Control deputies were assisted at the scene by deputies with the uniform services division of the Sheriff’s Office and Hartland Area Fire Department.
