We asked questions of some of the students involved in the production. Here, we talk to Skye Schlueter, a Hartland High School sophomore, who plays Steve in “Almost, Maine.”

What do you think is the universal meaning behind this show?

I think that the universal meaning of this show is that love takes many forms, and even the same couple has a constantly evolving relationship with love. There is no formula for what a relationship is or how love happens, and the best that anyone can do is just their best.

How would you describe your character?

Steve is someone who never really learned how to lie, so he is able to say completely outlandish things with absolute sincerity. He is in a situation that leaves him unable to connect with anyone but is completely oblivious to the fact that he has been cut off from the world until the right person comes along and is able to break that barrier between him and everyone else.

What is your theater background? Did you get involved as a child, or is it more of a recent pursuit?

I have been performing all my life through dancing, singing, and band, but I have only done theater productions with the Hartland High School so far. My first was when I was in 7th grade during the HHS production of “The Music Man.” I started consistently being in productions when I started going to high school last year.

What extracurriculars and/or clubs are you involved with in addition to Hartland Drama Club?

I am involved in the Hartland marching band, chamber choir, and optimist club.

Would you be friends with your character in real life? Why or why not?

I don’t think that I would, though not out of any malice on either end. Through no fault of his own, Steve is closed off from the world, and any interactions he does have with people are usually awkward, to say the least. In short, Steve is bad at making first impressions. If I could get past that, I imagine he would be an interesting guy to talk to.

What would your character’s theme song be? What about your own?

I think my theme song is “Corridors of Time” from Chrono Trigger, and Steve’s theme song might be “Logic and Tricks” from Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.
