Indivisible Livingston plans demonstration against keynote speaker at GOP event

Indivisible Livingston plans a peaceful demonstration outside the Livingston County Republican Party’s Reagan Day Dinner at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Howell on Thursday, Oct. 26 against the keynote speaker at this year’s event, former Milwaukee County Sheriff and commentator David A. Clarke.

Protest organizers want to send a message to local Republican Party leaders that Clarke’s stances on law enforcement, racial justice, and immigration issues do not mirror those of the community.

“Clarke has a history of being pro-mass incarceration, pro-mass deportation, and allowed inhumane treatment of mentally ill and pregnant inmates while he was sheriff of Milwaukee,” said Kasey Helton of Howell. “These are not the values and beliefs that we want people to associate with Livingston County. We want our elected officials and local Republican Party leaders to know that the fringe ideology held by Clarke is not welcome in our community.”

The demonstration is set for 5:30-9:30 Oct. 26 outside the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center at 5768 E. Grand River Ave. in Howell. More information about the event can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
