LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Investigate attack on Michigan Capitol, attempts to overthrow the vote

StateWide Indivisible Michigan (SWIM) releases this statement demanding lawmakers uncover the truth about the ties between the attacks on the Michigan and U.S. Capitol buildings as well as the efforts to overturn election results. SWIM supports House Resolution 10 to create a bipartisan committee to investigate the threats against lawmakers and election officials.

In April 2020, the world watched terrorists storm the Michigan Capitol Building, carrying weapons of war and intimidating elected officials in Lansing who were doing the work of the people. We were shocked by the ease with which these terrorists took over the sanctuary and disrupted the session. We later came to know this extremist act was a dress rehearsal for the planned attack on the U.S. Capital less than a year later. An attack that left five people dead and over one hundred police officers injured.

The assault on Michigan voters continued when the Republican Party organized fake electors to breach the same building and overturn the results of the 2020 election.

We know that our freedom to vote will remain under threat until the truth is uncovered, the plan is revealed and the people responsible are held accountable for their shameful roles in these attacks. When Speaker Wentworth blocks this investigation, voters know that he and other Republicans fear their part in these traitorous acts will be exposed.

The members of StateWide Indivisible Michigan support Resolution 10 and call for the creation of a committee to investigate both the assault on Michigan’s State Capitol and the attempts to overturn election results.
