Krol president blames WHMI layoffs on economic woes in wake of pandemic

Two on-air personalities and one other WHMI-FM staffer lost their jobs on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020.

Though Rod Krol, president of Krol Communications, which owns WHMI, did not detail which employees were let go other than to say they were “three full-time, outstanding staff members,” it’s believed that mid-day host Julie Wood and afternoon host Buzz Elliott are gone; their employee profiles and contact information are no longer available on the WHMI website.

“The station’s Morning Show with Mike & Jon since 2002 remains on the air and committed to continuing to serve Livingston and surrounding counties,” Krol said in a statement. “WHMI’s award-winning news department will also continue to provide the community with the best in local news and information.”

Krol laid blame for the layoffs on the pandemic: “Like every other small business, the economic impact (of COVID-19) had to be addressed,” he said.

WHMI-93.5 FM was purchased in 2015 by the Owosso-based Krol Communications, which owns radio stations throughout mid-Michigan.
