Gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer headlining Dems’ Winans Dinner

Gretchen Whitmer, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Michigan governor, will be the featured speaker at the Livingston County Democrats’ 35th-annual Winans Dinner.

Whitmer, the former state Senate Democratic leader, fought to expand Medicaid to 630,000 Michigan residents and against Republican attacks on workers’ rights, including passage of the right-to-work law. She will speak on “Fighting for the Michigan We Deserve.”

The event is Friday, May 18, at Lakelands Golf and Country Club, 8760 Chilson Rd., in Hamburg Township. Tickets are $70 per person through April  27, and $80 per person after that. Student tickets are $25, but a limited number of free tickets for high school students are available due to the generosity of the Michigan Education Association.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour and cash bar, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Included are snacks, a sit-down dinner, dessert, cash bar, silent auction, raffle, and great conversation with like-minded people.

You can order tickets online by clicking here, or you can mail a check made out to Livingston County Democrats to the party at 8028 Grand River Ave., Woodland Plaza Suite 7, Brighton, Mich. 48114. Include the names of attendees so name tags can be prepared. No cash can be accepted, per state law.

Christopher Smith and Elissa Slotkin, candidates for the 8th Congressional District, also will speak.

  1. So what – This comment implies that all of us who like in the Winans Lake Community are a part of or sponsor of this. Very odd that I have lived here 40 yrs. & some neighbors longer & we have never heard of such a think. This naming is a manipulation.

    • I think this is the 37th year the Democrats have had the Winans Dinner. I know it’s been called that ever since I’ve moved to Livingston County, which is nearly 30 years ago. The lake and community and dinner are named after a Democrat. What’s the problem with that? We should all think it’s cool that a former Michigan governor is from Livingston County (in addition to having a Republican one – George Romney – buried in Brighton).

  2. Why are you calling this a “Winans” dinner ? This has Nothing to do with Winans Lake or the Winans Lake Community ???? Will you inquire of the MEA if they will provide “free” student tickets to a comparable Republican event ?

    • It’s called the Winans Dinner (and Winans Lake) because Edwin Winans (1826-1984), a U.S. Congressman and governor of Michigan, was born in Hamburg Township. He was also a Democrat.
