Great Start/Help Me Grow Livingston has several new additions and updates to the popular StoryWalk program, giving families even more opportunities to enjoy literacy, outdoor exploration, and community connections throughout Livingston County this summer.
StoryWalks combine reading and physical activity by displaying pages of a children’s book along a walking route, encouraging families to move, learn, and enjoy stories together. For summer, each Livingston County StoryWalk location has been refreshed with a brand-new story, providing new adventures for returning visitors.
Among the newest additions is a StoryWalk at the new Trinity Health Livingston Hospital in Brighton. Families, patients, visitors, and staff can enjoy “Baa Baa Tap Sheep” along a pathway beside the cancer center, helping bring moments of joy, movement, and literacy to the healthcare setting.
Great Start Livingston is also in Veterans Park in Brighton Township, another outdoor location where families can experience a story while exploring local parks. This location recently celebrated its grand opening with books and activities from community partners like SELCRA, the Brighton District Library, and the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce.
In downtown Howell, the third annual Stories in Storefronts program is now underway and will remain on display through the end of August. Families can stroll through downtown businesses while following the pages of “Acoustic Rooster and Friends,” turning a visit downtown into an interactive literacy adventure. The story begins at the Howell Carnegie District Library and continues through 10 participating storefronts. Maps are available in Youth Services inside the library.

Another exciting update is a partnership with the Livingston Hunger Council to help spread awareness of food resources throughout the county. Located currently at Genoa Township Park, the featured StoryWalk showcases “Kevin and the Food Drive,” a story that introduces young readers to generosity, food insecurity, and ways they can help others in their community. The storywalk also highlights local food needs and encourages conversations about hunger awareness among families.
“StoryWalks continue to be a wonderful way to bring literacy to life for young children and into our public spaces,” said Robin Schutz, Great Start Livingston coordinator. “We’re grateful to our many community partners who help make these experiences possible and help us inspire a love of reading while encouraging families to be active together.”
Families are encouraged to visit multiple StoryWalk locations throughout the summer and discover the unique stories, activities, and community partnerships featured at each site.
