ELECTION 2020: The race for the 8th Congressional District

The Livingston Post teamed up with the League of Women Voters and WHMI on the Republican primary forums for county prosecutor, the 47th state House district, and the 8th Congressional District.

Because of COVID-19, the forums were conducted virtually on June 24, 2020, with the assistance of Glenn Fischer of the Hartland Cromaine District Library.

Below is the recording for the race for the 8th Congressional District.

Three of the four candidates in the Republican primary were on hand for the forum: Alan Hoover, an Iraq veteran and entrepreneur from Ortonville in Oakland County; Paul Junge of Brighton, a former prosecutor and TV news anchor; and Kristina Lyke of Fowlerville, an attorney at Lyke Law in East Lansing. Mike Detmer of Howell, a sales manger at an automobile dealership, withdrew from participation because of a scheduling conflict.

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a moderate Democrat, flipped the 8th District seat held by Republicans for almost two decades by beating U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, in 2018.

The 8th Congressional District includes Livingston, Ingham and northern Oakland counties.

  1. Representative Slotkin is a class act, and serves our county with integrity. I can’t imagine either of these three candidates showing half of the leadership she has shown. Alan hoover and Krtistina Lyke come across as unprofessional and oblivious as to what members of congress actually do (might need to re-read their high school civics textbooks instead of random tweets, and I noticed Paul Junge never says anything of substance about his time living in the district, maybe because he only moved to Michigan a year ago just to run for Congress after cherrypicking OUR district as a place to run. Give me a break, this guy reeks of DC bureaucrat, not a true michigander in the slightest…
