Detmer eyeing three possible runs in 2022

Mike Detmer

Saying he was buoyed by his losing GOP primary campaign to take on U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin in the General Election, uber-conservative Republican Mike Detmer has formed an exploratory committee to run in 2022 against one of three women: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Slotkin, or state Sen. Lana Theis.

While Paul Junge won the four-way GOP primary for the 8th District Congressional seat with 35.1% of the vote, Detmer came in second with 28.6% of the vote, and he carried Livingston County with 36.5%.

After the primary, Detmer refused to support fellow Republican Junge.

“Based on my campaign performance in the 2020 primary for the U.S. house, winning Livingston County by a sizable margin … we are in a tremendously good and even stronger place to step back up for 2022,” Detmer said in a release.

There are 160,058 registered voters in Livingston County, and Detmer got 12,396 votes in the primary.

He went on to say that there has been “resounding public support and requests for not only another U.S. House run, but a gubernatorial run instead.”

“It has also been requested that I look at a state senate run that would challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Lana Theis,” Detmer said. He did not disclose who “requested” him to challenge the popular Theis.

Highlights of Detmer’s primary run included a group selfie at a rally against Gov. Whitmer’s stay-home order in April that included a man wearing a “Proud Boys” hat and flashing a white-power sign. You can read about that here, and his one-man boycott of Biggby’s because a barista asked him to follow the rules and wear a mask.

“So, my team and I will look at what the most reasonable and viable option of not running for any seat at all, but possibly assisting great candidates in 2022,” Detmer said. “In any case, much prayer and guidance from God will be paramount to any decision.”

That decision, Detmer said, will be made after the first of the year.
