Cops stop 60 drivers during recent distracted driving initiative; seatbelt enforcement up next

Twenty-one drivers were cited for texting while driving by Livingston County Sheriff’s deputes during the two-week Distract Driving Enforcement Initiative of the Office of Highway Safety Planning, which ran April 9-22.

In all, deputies stopped 60 drivers and issued 37 citations. In addition to the 21 for texting while driving, there were also citations for careless driving and speeding. The enforcement also resulted in two arrests for suspected driving under the influence of alcohol, and five for driving on a suspended driver’s license.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office plans to participate in a similar initiative during the weekend of Memorial Day, where directed enforcement will focus on seatbelt use.

  1. I hope they make Michigan a state where cell phone use is prohibited while driving…or hands free only….
