Cindy Denby, a former state representative and longtime Handy Township elected official, is being remembered for her service to and love of her community and constituents.
Denby, 70, died today after a long battle with cancer.
“Cindy will always be loved because of all the loving kindness she gave to so many people,” said Sue Dolato, a former senior legislative assistant in the Michigan legislature. The two women met while they were working in Lansing, and ended up carpooling to the Capitol; during those rides, Dolato said they enjoyed “so many heartfelt conversations.”
“We instantly clicked,” Dolato said in a social media post. “We shared many of the same interests and passions well over a couple of decades, and had many, many adventures over the years. We also shared so many joys and tough times.”
Denby served in the Michigan House of Representatives for three terms, from 2009-2014. She also served 16 years on the Handy Township Board, eight years as clerk, and eight years as supervisor.
“Cindy spent nearly her entire career in service to others,” said Meghan Reckling, former chair of the Livingston County Republican Party. “Her commitment to our community extended far beyond any one office or title, and her family has long been part of the fabric of western Livingston County.”
Reckling said she was fortunate to know Denby through their involvement in Republican politics.
“She genuinely loved Livingston County,” she said. “She cared deeply about the people who call it home, and she dedicated her life to serving this community. She will be deeply missed.”
Former state Rep. Hank Vaupel, who succeeded Denby in the state legislature and for whom she worked, said she was an “outstanding person.”
“Cindy was an example of how everybody should be. She was so knowledgeable, and she cared deeply for her constituents,” he said. “She was a person of impeccable integrity.
“We’d been friends a long time. I don’t know if I’ve ever met a better human being.”
Dolato agreed: “Her loss to the community and all who loved her is immense. I, and so many others, are thankful for her love and life.”
Gatherings at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, 1005 E. Grand River Ave. in Fowlerville, are set for 4-7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, followed by a celebration of life at 11 a.m.
