ART Doing Good puts out call to artists for new mural in downtown Howell

Michigan-based artists invited to apply for community-inspired public art project at The Collective
September 21, 2026

ART Doing Good  — a Howell-based nonprofit creating community-inspired public art — is inviting Michigan-based artists and artist teams to apply for a new mural at 214 S. Michigan Ave. in downtown Howell.

The project builds on ART Doing Good’s work using public art to reflect the people, experiences and connections that shape a community, while creating welcoming spaces that invite engagement.

“We want to give the artist insight into who’s here, what connects us, and the perspectives that can be translated into artwork that welcomes others into our community,” said Susan Pominville, founder of ART Doing Good.

ART Doing Good is currently gathering perspectives from people who live, work in and visit Howell about the people, places, experiences and traditions that help tell the community’s story, along with how they hope others feel when they arrive.

The selected artist will receive that community input as inspiration for an original mural concept.

The input is intended to provide insight into the community while giving the artist room to identify themes, connections and perspectives and interpret them through their own creative voice.

The opportunity is open to Michigan-based artists and artist teams, with artists from Livingston County and Southeast Michigan especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should be able to develop an original concept and scale and complete artwork on a large exterior wall. Previous large-scale mural experience is preferred.

Applications are due Nov. 2, 2026. The artist is expected to be selected by the end of November, with installation planned for May 2027.

ART Doing Good will also offer an information session and Q&A for artists interested in learning more about the opportunity.

Complete project details and application information are available at artdoinggood.org.
