The Anytime Fitness gyms in Howell, Hartland and Hamburg are open for business – in spite of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s order and a subsequent court ruling that gyms in this part of the state are not yet allowed to open.

The openings were announced on their Facebook pages, and people were working out on both Thursday and Friday. Anytime Fitness is a franchise, and the Howell and Hartland locations are both owned by the same person.

The gyms opened on Thursday after a legal battle played out. Gov. Whitmer ordered all gyms in the state closed back in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney ruled last week that the gyms should be allowed to open on June 25, but Whitmer appealed the ruling. Late in the evening on June 24, just hours before the gyms were going to be able to open, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals overruled Maloney’s decision, saying the gyms needed to remain closed.

That ruling didn’t sway the Anytime Fitness locations in Howell, Hartland and Hamburg, which decided to open on Thursday anyway. The Howell location posted on its Facebook page late Wednesday night, “We will still be opening tomorrow, even with this new turn of events.”
