A tuition-free Montessori school: Light of the World Academy sets open house March 20

Light of the World Academy, a tuition-free Montessori charter school in Pinckney, is accepting enrollments for the 2016-17 school year – and the school is inviting prospective families to attend an open house at the school.

The open house takes place Sunday, March 20, from 1-3 p.m. at the school, located at 550 E. Hamburg St. in the Village of Pinckney. For information, call 734-720-9760 or e-mail kathy@lightoftheworldacademy.org. Enrollment information is also available on the school’s Web site, www.lightoftheworldacademy.org. (Click here.) Light of the World Academy currently operates as a K-6 school, and will be expanding to K-7 this fall.

Prospective families will be able to tour the school and meet staff and students during the open house. There will also be a free magic show at 2 p.m. Enrollment forms will be available.

Light of the World Academy opened in the fall of 2015 as a tuition-free public charter school, after operating for 13 years as a private school in Pinckney.

“Traditionally, a Montessori education has only been available to families that can afford it, but we’ve always felt that it should be available to everyone,” said school director Kathy Moorehouse. “That’s why we made the decision to become a tuition-free charter school, and our first year has been a tremendous success. We invite any family looking for a first-class free Montessori education to come to the open house on March 20.”

The Montessori method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. It is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive.

As a public charter school, Light of the World Academy is available tuition-free to any Michigan resident. Light of the World Academy is the only public Montessori school anywhere in the Livingston County/Washtenaw County area.

In addition to the Montessori education, Light of the World Academy also offers art and music as a regular part of the curriculum.

The school also has a strong tradition of community service, both globally and locally. This year, students have been raising money to help build a chicken farm in a village in Uganda. The school also supports such organizations as the Pinckney Food Bank, Pinckney Senior Center, Raincatchers (an organization that provides water resources and more to Haiti), the Pinckney Community Youth Development Initiative (PCYDI) and more.
