The Root cancels plans for second location in Howell

NOROOTWell, that’s a fine way to get bad news!

The Root Restaurant & Bar, after announcing to great fanfare earlier this year that it was buying the old Howell Theater with the intention of opening a second location, posted on its Facebook page this Saturday morning that it was canceling its plans.

In the equivalent of a Friday news dump, the Facebook post explained the reason:

“…The growth and expansion of owner Ed Mamou’s recycling business has obligated a channeling of resources and time into other directions,” said the Facebook post. “Many of you know Howell is the hometown of Chef James and like many staff members at The Root he was excited to spread the reach of The Root’s cuisine to his own “roots”. We are sorry for any disappointment this brings.”

Sure, I am disappointed. The Root would have been a tremendous destination eatery, drawing diners from throughout the region. And I love, love, love its French onion soup.

But now I am left to wonder what’s to become of the Howell Theater building.

___The Root Restaurant & Bar, located in White Lake, was named the 2012 Detroit Free Press Restaurant of the Year.
