Students vote: Airplanes, dogs and pizza rule

//

On Friday, Oct. 28, first- and second-grade students at Southeast Elementary learned about one of their civic duties from Tammy Beal, Marion Township clerk, who visited the school to teach students about the voting process.

Students discussed the difference between open voting and private voting, how often presidential elections are held, and named former presidents. Following the lesson from Beal, each student voted in a mock election to determine if the students prefer pizza or hamburgers, cats or dogs, and boats or planes. After placing their secret ballot in the ballot box, students received an “I Voted” sticker.

“I learned that you can vote for whatever you want and you don’t have to vote for the same things that your friends do,” said a Southeast Elementary second-grade student.

With the results tabulated, the outcome of the Southeast Elementary First- and Second-Grade Mock Election was that students prefer airplanes, dogs and pizza.
