Okay, so I finally chose a book for our summer read. I thought I’d go with memoir this time especially since this one has been on my radar for a while and it is now out in paperback. It is “Full Body Burden- Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats” by Kristen Iversen. Not exactly light beach reading but the New York times says it is “intimate…powerful…a potent examination of the dangers of secrecy.” Iversen grew up in a small town close to a secret nuclear weapons plant. Not only is the book extensively researched through interviews, FBI and EPA documents and class-action testimony it tells the story of her family and of her neighborhood in a memoir that has been called “immensely readable”.
So, if this appeals to you, please join our summer edition of the Livingston Loves Lit Book Club. I’ll post questions from the Reader’s Guide in the back of the book every couple of weeks through the end of August. Feel free to respond in the comments or add your own questions. And if you have any suggestions for our last two picks of the year, please let me know that as well.
Happy summer of reading!
