International gender violence expert set for Howell event

LACASA Center will host a public talk by international gender violence activist, Jackson Katz, Ph.D., on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, from 7 – 9:30 p.m. at the Historic Howell Theater in Howell.

The public is invited to attend this free event titled: “Taking it Personally: Why Gender Violence is an Issue for the Community.”

Katz – an author, filmmaker and cultural theorist – is a worldwide pioneer in developing gender violence prevention initiatives.

This event serves as the launch of LACASA’s Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, which will be introduced in local school districts this November. The Katz lecture and the MVP program are funded by a three-year program grant from Chem Trend of Howell and its parent company, The Freudenberg Group.

Katz co-founded the MVP program to involve students as leaders in gender violence prevention and bystander intervention. The MVP sexual assault and relationship abuse prevention program is taught at high schools, colleges, professional sports teams, and in several branches of the military.

“This is a rare opportunity to hear the insights of a renowned social theorist,” said LACASA Community Education Director, Nicole Matthews-Creech. “Dr. Katz is influencing the way men, women and teens respond to gender violence, and is advocating for communities to work together to prevent interpersonal abuse.”

“We are excited to launch the MVP program in our area high schools,” Matthews-Creech said. “Livingston County students will be learning invaluable information about how to react and respond to relationship abuse and sexual assault.”

Katz has authored numerous books, including The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How Men Can Help. His TED talk, “Violence Against Women is a Men’s Issue,” has been viewed more than 2.5 million times. His videos include Tough Guise and Tough Guise 2.

The Katz awareness event is free and open to the public. Advance reservations are suggested; only limited tickets will be available at the door. Learn more and get tickets on LACASA’s website at lacasacenter.org.
