I wish you would’ve stayed in rehab: R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

The news that singer Amy Winehouse, 27, was found dead in her London home earlier today isn’t all that surprising. She was, after all, constantly battling drugs and alcohol addiction.

But her fans — including me — were always hopeful that somehow, some way, Winehouse would get her life together, record more amazing songs, make it through a performance or concert tour intact. But her demons were as strong and epic as her talent, and I can only hope that she has finally found the peace that always seemed to be out of her reach.

For those of you who know only of Winehouse as bee-hived and bad-behaving, give the following song a listen. I’ve posted two versions, the first a raw recording, the second from her Grammy-award winning “Back to Black.” Close your eyes and let Winehouse’s amazing vocals on “Love is a Losing Game” carry you away.

Then you’ll understand why — even though I am not a bit surprised — I am terribly saddened by the news of her death.
