Howell softball begins district tuneups today at Holt

HOWELL — Ron Pezzoni’s team has finished its KLAA season.

Now, his focus is on the Howell softball team’s second season, and staying busy.

Busy, as in a series of games against some of the better teams in the state.

It starts today, when the Highlanders travel to Holt for a single game that will be broadcast on The Livingston Post at 4:35 p.m.

I like playing, and with all the teams I’ve coached, the more we play the better they are,” he said. “They just get in that groove. I don’t like having a lot of days off without a game.”

The Rams (27-7) are a team the Highlanders (18-8) could meet in the regionals, if both teams make it that far.

“I want to be a little familiar with playing on that field,” Pezzoni said, “so when we go there in a couple of weeks, we play well, and there’s no adjustment period.”

After today, the Highlanders will play in a round-robin tournament at Farmington Hills Mercy on Saturday, taking on No. 2-ranked Mercy at 8 a.m. and defending champion Harper Woods Regina later in the morning.

“We always tell our girls all year, we worry more about us than them, no matter if we’re playing the No. 1 team in the state, or a not-so-good team,” Pezzoni said.

“I think after this weekend and next week especially, I don’t know if there’s any tougher schedule than ours,” he added. “So these girls will be battle-tested.”

In all, the Highlanders will play six games between the end of the league season and a district semifinal against either Pinckney or Dexter a week from Saturday.
