Howell High School moved up the start of Wednesday’s Lakes Conference girls basketball championship game an hour to account for predictions of heavy snow.

Turns out that wasn’t nearly enough.

Heavy snow, and the forecast of much more, forced the contest to be moved to Friday night.

The freshman, junior varsity and varsity games will be played as originally scheduled, with the freshman at 4 p.m., JV at 5:30 and the varsity at 7.

The move means there will be no KLAA league champion this year, as the Kensington Conference title match between Wayne and Canton was also postponed to Friday. Howell athletic director Dan Hutcheson said league officials haven’t decided to crown Friday’s winners as co-champions or leave the title vacant.

Rescheduling the title game wasn’t an option, not with the state tournament starting on Monday.

In other game news, the hockey rematch between Hartland and Livonia Stevenson set for Wednesday was cancelled due to the weather, and the Lakes Conference boys matchup between Walled Lake Western and Hartland at Hartland has been scheduled for Tuesday. That game was originally set to be played on Saturday, but the Hartland gym wasn’t available due to a previous commitment.
