About the teams
Howell is 25-1 this season, the only loss coming against Lakeland during the regular season. The Highlanders avenged that defeat on Monday, beating the Eagles 13-11 by scoring three unearned runs on Lakeland errors in the top of the seventh. Canton is 19-2 and got to the final by beating Northville 5-1 on Monday.
Howell coach Ron Pezzoni admits he doesn’t know a lot about the Chiefs. “I know a few of the kids from travel ball,” he said. “I know they’re a solid team. Trying to find out a little more today about them. But if they’re playing in this game, they’re a good team.” Pezzoni and the Highlanders are more focused on what they want to accomplish rather than worry about the Chiefs. “We say don’t worry about the other team,” Pezzoni said. “Let’s take care of our business. If we do what we do well, we’ll be in good shape.”
Highlanders to watch
Pezzoni’s daughters, Veronica (who will attend the University of Tennessee-Martin next year) and Sydney are part of Howell’s offensive machine, along with Emma Johnson and Maddie Gillett. Inside the circle, freshman Molly Carney has emerged as the team’s ace.
The last time
This is Howell’s first trip to the KLAA title game since the first year of the league back in 2009. The Highlanders have won 11 games in a row going in.
